The aim of this project is twofold: to enable linux to act as a dial-up server for Macintoshes or client to an Appletalk LAN; and to provide a catch-all means for encapsulating Appletalk traffic between two LANs, be it over modem, wire, telnet etc.
Here's a slightly longer description.
Jan 13, 1999 Some days ago, Rob Newberry announced his version 0.02. Here's from his announcement message from linux-atalk:
Subject: AppleTalk-PPP/Apple Remote Access Support To: LINUX-ATALK@NETSPACE.ORG This is to announce my set of patches for supporting AppleTalk Remote Access users as dial-up clients of a Linux machine. Below is some relevant information from the README. I'm announcing it here on Linux-Atalk first, but will also be announcing on netatalk-admins, "comp.protocols.appletalk" and "comp.protocols.ppp". I hope users on this list will try out the patches and give me feedback. I'm eager to hear from other users. OVERVIEW This set of patches allows a Linux box running "pppd" and "netatalk" to act as a dial-up server for AppleTalk users. These patches have specifically been tested against Apple Remote Access clients. THE AUTHOR MAKES NO REPRESENTATIONS ABOUT THE SUITABILITY OF THIS SOFTWARE FOR ANY PURPOSE. IT IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY. Let me stress: this code is "alpha" quality. It has NOT been thoroughly tested on any number of systems. I look forward to receiving feedback from other users so that more information about the quality of this code may be made available. Much of the original work was done by Morio Taneda, and I am very, very grateful to his efforts toward making this support possible. I have created a web page for documenting the project and making new releases available. http://www.eats.com/linux_atalk/atalk_ppp.html You can also get the information directly via FTP, at ftp://ftp.eats.com/pub/atalkppp-0.02.tar.gz Rob Newberry Linux AppleTalk Hacker rob@eats.com

Nov 18, 1998 Sorry, i'm not going to work on it further in the forseeable future (as some of you surely suspected anyway). Porting to recent ppp versions should be very easy (i looked at it briefly).
Meanwhile, some nice folks have adopted the dial-in case, which can be solved on an AARP basis:
Jay Schulist has been working on something similar, but from one of his posts (Aug. 1998) it appeared he does not have code ready (?) Ask him on the linux-atalk list.
More recently, Rob Newberry posted on linux-atalk (Nov. 17, 1998) about a kernel AARP solution, also with a pppd based on the one described here. Look for his release announcement on linux-atalk.
(Jun 5, 1997) Testing didn't show any major flaws when dialling in from a mac to an isolated linux server. Routing between two Appletalk LANs using a PPP tunnel doesn't work yet, i'll post patches for the errors i've found so far soon (till the end of the week). Meanwhile i'm not happy with ppp2.3b3 as it's not in the 2.1 kernels, so i'll spend some time porting the changes back to ppp-2.2.0f.
Repackaged the diffs, better description of installation procedure. No new code yet.
The first version available for testing. The code consists of:
